Equipment
There are tons of different equipment to choose from
A place to have a look at todays sleddog equipment, is at Peers Husky shop in Austria www.peershuskyshop.com. Also VILDMANNEN i Sverige has quality gear.
Harneses and other stuff
Harneses must fit each dog individually. Think of it this way. If you had on a pair of running shoes one size to small, would you be able to make a nice performance on the track? Or if they were to big? Also a harness must give the dog support at several spots on the body, so it feels safe when running into curves etc. Booties we use to avoid the feet to be injuried.
The wrong equipment can be fatal
Some equipment may have a fatal outcome. Say for an example, that you are putting on a team of dogs on your sled. They are eager to go, and pulls in harness, allthough you are not yet ready to go. Well, if the sled is not safely tied up to a spike in the ground of perhaps a car, the team might just run off with out you. However if the sled is tied to a strong point, the team will stay, provided that your equipment is strong enough. We once used these "panic release" metal devices. Brand new too. Guess what? It broke. We always have 2 ropes tied to the sled in the case something like this should happen. But we always thought it was kind of "over kill". We don't think so anymore.
